When Craigellachie based Standfast Engineering was in the market for new turning centres, the company knew exactly what it wanted. The Scottish company was intent upon finding machines that could provide longevity, build quality, precision and value for money - and this is why the subcontractor opted for turning centres from CMZ.

In the last eight years Standfast Engineering has acquired four CNC turning centres from CMZ and the key reason for this is the support network and service provided by CMZ. As Standfast's Mr Malcolm Fraser comments: 'As an engineering company our location is quite remote, support was a key factor in our decision and we have every confidence in CMZ as they can get a Scottish based engineer to us within 24 to 36 hours.'

The latest installation is a CMZ TC35Y. Unlike its previous 2-axis turning centres, the company has opted for a more capable machine tool based on the request of the machine operator. As Mr Malcolm Fraser of Standfast Engineering comments: 'We took a lot of advice and recommendations from numerous sources, but it was the request of the machine operator that really settled the decision for us. All our CMZ machines have delivered a payback period of less than two years and we envisage a fast payback period on the new machine also. With a C and Y axis we can now complete parts in a single set-up on the new CMZ rather than transfer to secondary operations and this is quite refreshing for us.'

'The CMZ line is a very well made machine and it is built for longevity. We have a number of turned jobs that are receiving some heavy duty milling operations on the new CMZ TC35Y and it is demonstrating its rigidity and build quality.'

The CMZ TC35Y installed at Standfast has been supplied with a steady and tailstock for turning longer components and shafts as the work conducted for the oil & gas sector tends to be relatively long and thin and produced from relatively difficult to cut materials. With a 16 station tool turret, the company can complete a host of machining processes with the utmost of flexibility. As Mr Fraser continues: "We bought the machine out of the brochure without seeing it. We have worked with CMZ's Ross Mills for 12 years and we have a great relationship and we trust his judgement, as he has rarely put us wrong and its worked for us.'
