As a specialist subcontract supplier to the aerospace industry, Rodford Engineering Ltd in Wimborne, has witnessed considerable growth over the last two years. A growth that has seen the Dorset subcontractor buy two turning centres from CMZ to support its capacity demands.

The first CMZ turning centre was acquired some 18 months ago to improve productivity in the company's expanding turning department. As Rodford Engineering's Works Director, Mr Neil Dallyn explains to MTDCNC: 'Primarily our machine shop is built around mill/turn machines. This is because the ability of mill/turn centres to manufacture the same jobs as a machining centre whilst taking away some of the time consuming and labour intensive set-up and changeover processes, makes a multi-tasking machine a better option.'

Highlighting this philosophy, Mr Dallyn continues: 'Our first CMZ mill/turn centre, a TL25A arrived 18 months ago and it has a 65mm diameter bar capacity with the option of fitting a 10 inch chuck. Added to this flexibility, the TL25A has driven tooling with a spindle speed of 12,000rpm. This far exceeds our other turning centres and most of our machining centres. The benefit is that we can run jobs much faster and be more productive with reduced set-up times. One example is a small stainless steel part that requires cross drilling and some milling features. The ability to turn and then mill at high speeds and feeds has reduced the cycle time by over 30%. Of course, to do this you need a rigid and robust platform and the CMZ has rigidity in abundance.'

The success of the first CMZ machine soon noted the Dorset subcontractor taking on a second CMZ machine, a TA25Y that arrived in the summer. The robust mill/turn centre with Y-axis capability also has a turret spindle with a 12,000rpm capability. As Mr Dallyn continues: 'The 12,000rpm milling turret on the TA25Y has been superb for the company's aluminium work. The Y-axis provides flexibility that instantly reduces cycle times with a reduction in set-ups for complex jobs. For example, a recent milling job required five operations (2 turning & 3 milling), by transferring to the new CMZ TA25Y, we have cut the cycle time to 3mins from 8mins. This is because we can mill at the  same feeds but 3 times faster and this is credit to the spindle speed capability. We are delighted with our CMZ acquisitions and as we move forward we are already looking at our next machine tool purchases.'
