Haas and Express Composite Solutions (ECS)

Northamptonshire-based Express Composite Solutions (ECS) was founded by David Damsell and Andy Collins, both of whom have a wealth of experience in pattern, mould and composites tooling. David and Andy are supported by Lead Design Engineer, Darren Cudd.


Since starting three years ago, ECS has built a client list comprising largely F1 teams. Typical turn-around times from placing an order to delivery are of the order of two days, depending on the complexity of the part. The business is now looking to enter other markets.


David and Andy met at Red Bull F1 and after working together for many years, decided to start ECS to produce patterns, moulds and composite inserts for the Formula One industry and beyond. 


‘As a relatively young company, we have attracted talented and experienced engineers with extensive knowledge of composites manufacture across a range of industry sectors,’ says David Damsell. ‘Currently specialising in F1 motor sport, our skilled team is equally adept at providing swift, accurate solutions for any industry requiring high quality composite tooling.


‘Even though ECS has only been trading for just 3 years, the company has grown quickly and has invested heavily in new machinery to fill the growing work capacity requirements.’


David has a worked in a wide variety of precision engineering companies, patterns and composite tooling. He has a passion for motor sport and has worked for severalF1 teams including Jaguar and Red Bull where his responsibilities ranged from initial stages of machining patterns through to completion of the end component and as a model maker for wind tunnel aerodynamic testing.


Andy’s career has covered defence (guided weapons) and satellites engineering, with what is now BAE Systems, and motor sport, including Jordan Grand Prix, British American Racing, Jaguar and Red Bull. He is an experienced CNC machinist and model maker, and has set up and managed workshops with both 3 axis and 5 axis machines.


The business has now expanded it's capability of producing metal components with the purchase of a new Haas VF-2SSYT and the imminent delivery of a VF4SS. 


Andy Collins, explained: ‘The new Haas machine for aluminium, titanium and composite manufacture is part of our planned growth strategy. We are committed to investing in plant and premises in order to fulfill existing clients’ growing requirements and to meet increasing demands from new customers. Although we have a strong reputation in F1, clients from other industry sectors are now also seeking out our expertise and services. The new machines and expanded workspace allow 24/7 operations in composite, aluminium and other materials manufacturing.’
