Senior Aerospace Weston Takes Its Tally Of Hartford Machining Centres Into Double Figures

Senior Aerospace Weston (SAW), a leading supplier of complex machined aerospace components and sub-assemblies, continues to enhance its portfolio of Hartford machining centres to meet a growing order book at its Earby (Lancashire) site.

T W Ward CNC Machinery (Ward CNC), Hartford’s exclusive distributor in the UK and Ireland, has recently supplied the precision machining specialist with its tenth Hartford machine – a Super HCMC 1682 single-table, open-fronted vertical machining centre for processing structural components – and SAW has now followed this up with an order for a similar model.

Like before, these newer machines have been selected because they were adjudged by Les Thomas, SAW’s director of business introduction, on their market-leading suitability for the job in hand as well as for their excellent cost-to-performance record at machining similar parts of varying sizes.

Supplying a wide range of components and sub-assemblies to original equipment manufacturers predominantly in the commercial aviation market sector, SAW’s extensive experience and core capabilities support multiple segments of an aircraft’s build, including engine compressor and fan components, engine pylon mounting brackets, pintles and wing ribs as well as aero-structure components.

It was to enhance its capacity for cost-effectively machining the aluminium and titanium structural workpieces, of varying dimensions and in relatively small batch quantities, that the recent investments have been made.

''Applying relatively straightforward machining sequences (mainly milling routines), in every case it is the removal of substantial amounts of stock, accurately and consistently that is our prime concern with these components – and the Hartford Super HCMC 1682s are undoubtedly fit for purpose,'' adds Mr Thomas.

Not only do the machines provide suitable X, Y and Z capacities of 1,600 mm by 820 mm by 660 mm and can accommodate loads of 2,200 kgs, but they also boast a rigid machining performance that is based on hardened and ground box guideways. This is complemented by a two-speed auto geared headstock, a BT 50 spindle taper and a 26 kW spindle motor that produces 6,000 revs/min.  

''We always assimilate all possible alternative machines whenever we need to expand capacity,'' adds Mr Thomas. ''With a clutch of Hartfords in place, it is obvious that we are very pleased with the machines’ longevity of performance and Ward CNC’s back-up and support.''
