Heavy workload for Quaser VMC at Clean Plastic Mouldings

Since installing a three axis Quaser MV 184E vertical machining centre in its tool room, the toolmakers at Margam, South Wales based plastic moulding experts Clean Plastic Mouldings have transferred over 90% of their workload to the machine with significant improvements in repeatable accuracy and machining productivity.

Although developed as a general purpose VMC capable of a wide variety of applications, the 184E’s construction quality and standard specification make it highly adept as a bespoke tool room machine as CPM director Hayden Dyer testifies.

'Two of the company’s three partners are time served toolmakers so when we were looking to replace an older machine that had been the cornerstone of the tool room we were fairly demanding,' he explains

'Our trusty Bridgeport Interact 720 was getting a bit ‘long in the tooth’ and as we rotate our machinery investment between tool room machines and production injection moulders, when the VMC became due we first returned to Bridgeport, by then of course owned by Hardinge.

'They recommended the Quaser – a new name to us - but from talking with others it offered an exceptional combination of build quality, reliability and importantly, a Heidenhain controls package.'
The 184E offers a high specification with a BIG-PLUS spindle system – featuring its unique grease replenishment system - fitted as standard. CPM’s machine has a BT40, 30 tool capacity ATC and offers face and end milling capability, drilling (with 20 bar through spindle coolant) and tapping – making it an invaluable, fully tool room capable machine.

Most of CPM’s tool manufacturing and re-furbishing is on aluminium work with the 184E capable of performing high speed cutting - using balanced tooling, 15,000 rev/min is comfortably achieved.
The Quaser also offers an exceptional heavy duty steel cutting capability, particularly useful if tool refurbishment on stainless steel or alloy tools is required.

In the tool room environment repeatable accuracy was vital for CPM with the Quaser machine offering 0.004 repeatable positioning on the X, Y and Z axes and a consistent 1 micron machining tolerance.

The all-rounder capabilities of the Quaser machine are all important to CPM as Commercial Director Malcolm Dennis explains.

'We offer customers a one-stop-shop in that we will take a component from early stage solid model to delivery of the moulded component.  This has been a cornerstone of CPM’s success since the 1960’s, the philosophy being the customer wants a single point of supply.'

Today, CPM has established a number of clearly defined markets such as telecoms, cash management systems and medical where its abilities to mould a diversity of plastics based materials is widely recognised. From challenging pvc moulding to high precision glass filled components used on high speed fans and rotor blades, CPM is providing the complete solution from prototype to finished component.

'This puts an onus on our tool room to not only manufacture innovative new moulds and dies but also become extensively involved in tool re-furbishment and repairs to tools that we may not have even manufactured.  Time is always of the essence so the equipment we use has to be highly capable,' explains Malcolm Dennis.

'And there is the controller.  Our Interact 720 had a Heidenhain control and we have specified the latest (Heidenhain) TNC620 on the Quasar.  Our software consultants wrote a post processing programme that integrated the Interact programmes with the latest software in the new control.  It was relatively painless,' he adds.

Quaser machine tools are now available from the ETG Bridgeport Division of The Engineering Technology Group who provide sales, service and technical support for the complete range.
