Just over a year ago, Peterborough based Progressive CNC Engineering bought a SAHOS 5-axis machining centre from Asquith Butler. MTD went along to find out why the model and mould makers opted for the SAHOS machine...

The company has only been running for eight years and its supplies the automotive, marine, leisure and MoD industry sectors.  The first thing that strikes you when you enter Progressive CNC Engineering's machine shop is the size of the SAHOS machine with its large capacity bed of 6 by 3m. Telling us more about the 24,000rpm spindle machine and what its being used for, Progressive CNC Engineering's Managing Director Mr Jamie Harrison says: 'We are using the machine every day and very often to its full capacity. Some of our mould tools will be 6m long and for smaller jobs, we often load multiple jobs at any one time. This gives us a better turnaround and the opportunity to make more money from the machine.'

The bridge type machine with a Y-axis configuration enables Progressive to machine a vast array of parts in a single operation. As Mr Harrison continues: 'The big Y-axis and bed of the machine enables us to complete parts in a single operation, which improves precision and consistency. We do everything on the machine, regardless of whether its roughing, finishing, profiling and so on - I don't think there is anything it can't do - it's great.'

'We use soft materials such as polyurethane model boards and epoxy boards; we've also cut MDF and cedar wood on the machine. The machine will cut just about anything although we specialise in the softer materials with the machine operating almost 24/7. We are delighted with the SAHOS machine, its undoubtedly supporting our growth ambitions,' says Mr Harrison.
