Victor lathe serves 25 years for Farnworth and Langan

Victor lathe serves 25 years for Farnworth and Langan

Added to MTDCNC by Victor CNC Ltd on 17 March 2013

Blackburn based precision engineers Farnworth & Langan Ltd was established by the current Managing Director, Paddy Langan back in December 1963 and nearly 50 years later the company is still going strong and so is Paddy.  So with that wealth of experience behind him, we’re ever minded to take note of Paddy when he speaks up for Rochdale based Victor CNC Limited, the sole distributor of Victor CNC machine tools in the UK, Eire and selected countries within mainland Europe.

Farnworth & Langan’s stated company expertise has fundamentally been to provide sub-contract precision engineering services to the tipping gear and earth moving industries, but have, as an acknowledgement of market requirements, been able to diversify into producing varying components for numerous industries, including manufacturers of conveyors, industrial doors, bar fittings and furniture.

As a quality ISO 9001 certified sub-contract machine shop, they are proud to specialise in providing their customers with whatever they need, quickly and effectively.  This means any given day they can be machining simple aluminium parts or tough and difficult tool steels, such as EN24 and EN 32.

With 20 employees, Farnworth & Langan are currently enjoying a fruitful period within the manufacturing sector operating from their own purpose built 10k sq ft factory in Blackburn.

Their rolling investment in plant and equipment, together with their highly skilled and experienced workforce, has ensured that they are flexible enough in their approach to meet the demands of their customers either for high volume or alternatively the ‘one-off’ component, in a wide variety of materials.

As well as CNC milling and CNC turning the business offers plasma cutting and fabrication services, however the core of their production is delivered by their:

  • 5 Vertical machining centres (all 3 axis)
  • 5 CNC lathes (all 2 axis)

Many machine-shops these days have embraced the multi-axis machines ethos so they can perform both milling and turning on one machine. However, because of the nature of their business, at Farnworth & Langan both turning and milling are operated as separate disciplines and Paddy says that they intend to keep the capabilities separate as this arrangement ideally suits their working model.

In amongst all of those machining activities over all of those years, Paddy has certainly learned a thing or two about machines and over the last 5 years Paddy has been heartened to have purchased 3 x new Victor CNC Lathes from his near neighbours in Rochdale as direct replacements for 2 x older machines that were struggling to keep up with demand.

Commenting on why he’s committed to Victor models, Paddy reports: 'Our business relies on both our customers and suppliers and we need to be reactive and attentive to our customers’ needs.  Equally our suppliers need to extend the same consideration to us and with Victor CNC Limited this is never in doubt.  We previously had a Victor lathe for 25 years, would you believe, and it still did a great job for us until the day we part-exchanged it for a new Victor.  That old machine still held all our tolerances and rarely missed a beat.  Expectedly it was a little slower than the new machines but was still a great servant to our business.  Victor CNC Limited have a great team; they’re not just a business, they’re engineers with an understanding of applications and manufacturing.  Their machines are good, honest working and trouble free.'
