In the last 18 months Chappell Engineering in Stonehouse, has invested heavily in new machine tools as part of its continuous improvement strategy; a strategy that has resulted in five new machine tools being delivered by XYZ.

As a subcontractor that serves the Oil & Gas industry, Chappell Engineering has two facilities whereby production runs are processed in one area and prototypes and small batch runs are produced in another department. It's the prototype facility that has benefitted from the investment in the new XYZ machines. Previously operating  a series of manual lathes and milling machines in this facility, the company opted to upgrade to CNC machine tools from Burlescombe based XYZ Machine Tools..

Commenting upon the acquisitions, Mr Frank Phillips, Production Manager at Chappell Engineering says: 'The XYZ machines give us the flexibility to do prototypes, 1 offs or even small batches up to 15-20. These machines mean that our urgent jobs for certain customers can be slotted into our capacity with no problems. We are a very reactive and responsive company when it comes to the demands of our customers and the XYZ additions enable us to meet this demand.'

The XYZ cell at Chappell is occupied by a single machinist who programs and operates the machines on the shop-floor. As Mr Phillips continues: 'The parts are programmed at the machine and stored in the machine control and on our server, so if the same or similar part arises in the future, we can easily call upon the past program and either re-produce the part, or if the part is somewhat different, we can edit the program with ease.'

The company selected different XYZ ProTURN models for machining small, medium and large sized parts; a philosophy that is mirrored with its milling machines. The lathes offer capacity and clamping capability for small to large parts whereas the bed sizes of the milling machines also work to this fast turnaround mindset.

The machines were purchased for their flexibility but also their robust build quality that sees the Gloucestershire business machine everything from mild steel,  alloyed bronze, 718 and 625 steel through to nickel alloys. Commenting further, Mr Phillips says: 'What we like about the XYZ's is that regardless of machine sizes, the control units are all the same and this creates great flexibility and interchange-ability of parts between the machines. We seriously reviewed the marketplace and it was the XYZ machines that really stood out for us.'
