Maverick looks to the future with ‘time machine’ from XYZ Machine Tools

Having worked for several years at two of Scotland’s leading manufacturers of Bagpipes, Geordie Hunter decided in 2014 that the time was right for him to become his own boss. Epitomising the ‘one man in a shed’ approach, Geordie started his business, Maverick, in a small industrial unit with a manual lathe producing practice chanters, an essential accessory for any budding or experienced bagpipe player. While little known by those outside of the Bagpipe fraternity, the manufacture of practice Chanters is a very competitive market, so Geordie knew he had to be better and different to succeed.

Having won a substantial order for six machine tools for the Pribram Technical College in the Czech Republic, XYZ’s distributor, Rexim, had to overcome significant challenges to deliver the machines. Located in a building that dates to when the country was part of the Austro/Hungarian Empire, any structural changes that needed to be made to gained access were, as Rexim’s Milan Svarc states “Made me rather worried, as touching such an old building is bordering on tinkering with a National Heritage item, which can become quite an issue with the authorities.”

Have you ever looked at your food packaging and noticed the words and numbers on the box or packet? More than likely this was printed using a print head manufactured by Scottish Robotic Systems, a special purpose machine builder based in Perth, Scotland. Its printing systems are also widely used in the electronics industry as an aid to stock management of small electronic components, that tend to be stored on reels. From its early days in the spare bedroom of current director Ross Walker’s father’s house, the business has grown to supply customers worldwide, with close ties to Domino Printing, a world-leader in inkjet printing for the food and packaging sectors.

Goodfabs has been supplying fabricated exhaust systems for leading motorsport teams since it was founded by former McLaren employee Steve Good in 1982. Since Steve’s untimely death in 1999 his work has continued through a dedicated team that has developed business with customers that include many current and former Formula One teams, along with those racing in other series including Le Mans, Nascar, Indy Car, World Rally and Touring car championships.

BG Engineering plans for the future with XYZ

Investing in the future of its business in terms of skills and capacity as well as expanding organically and through acquisition is at the forefront of BG Engineering’s plans. This process has been accelerated following an investment in a strategic stake in the business by Cooper Brown Enterprises Limited in 2017. Acquisitions include the recent purchase of Sheffield-based Pentag Gears and Oilfield Equipment, which has relocated to BG Engineering’s Chesterfield facility, while organic growth will focus on diversifying from existing markets of energy, process control, rail, automotive, defence, and specifically into the aerospace sector.
